Associate General Counsel [ID: 192]
Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the General Counsel, the Associate General Counsel is responsible for administering, reviewing internal legal matters of the College, and assisting with litigation proceedings and other internal legal processes, as requested. Duties include advising the College administration on higher education legal issues, reviewing and negotiating contracts, working with Facilities and Risk Management on legal matters.  

Typical Essential Duties

  • Examines items and issues within the college to determine and evaluate legal ramifications;
  • Prepares responses to legal items and issues, and represents the College in the adjudication of matters of an internal nature;
  • Renders legal advice and assistance to administrators concerning legal matters, including that pertaining to the College’s direct support organizations;
  • Renders legal advice on personnel matters as requested;
  • Reviews and advises departments concerning records production pursuant to subpoenas and public records law;
  • Provides legal advice pertaining to Worker’s Compensation filings as requested;
  • Prepares responses to audit and compliance reporting requirements;
  • Reviews and researches federal laws and regulations, state policies and Board decisions to determine and evaluate the impact on the operation of the college;
  • Provides assistance to the General Counsel concerning legal matters under investigation;
  • Writes legal memorandum and articles concerning key legal issues for college faculty and staff, where requested;
  • Reviews and negotiates contracts and agreements on behalf of the College; drafts facilities related contracts for construction, contractor and engineering contracts, etc.; drafts and negotiates facility leases, subleases, amendments and rental agreements; works with college departments and vendors to negotiate and write contracts; drafts purchase and sales agreements and other documents related to real property, as requested; reviews affidavits and contractor lien waivers for final payments as necessary;
  • Assists in the development and review of documentation related to competitive solicitations and bids, including construction;
  • Reviews and responds to bankruptcy filings for the College.
  • Provides legal advice to Risk Management related to insurance and claims, as requested.

This is the first of five levels in the Administrative Management series.  The classification is responsible for directing the activities of an assigned administrative related department or program.  Incumbents work in an administrative related department or function which enables the College to function fiscally, operationally, or administratively.  Incumbents will develop strategies to accomplish goals, implement policies and procedures, and develop and monitor an assigned budget.  Incumbents may need to perform professional level work within assignment and will supervise employees or student workers.

Compensation: $87,351.91 - $109,189.89

Requirements:

Education:

LL.B. or JD from an accredited law school. Licensed to practice law in the State of Florida.

Experience:

Three (3) years experience in the legal field.

* An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job may be acceptable in lieu of those requirements listed above.

Physical:

  • Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
  • Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.  Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.  Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

License:

Licensed to practice law in the State of Florida.
