Senior Network Design & Security Engineer [ID: 288]
Position Summary:

SPC's IT Operations department is seeking an experienced network architect/engineer to join our team as a Senior Network Design & Security Engineer.  This position is focused on the designing and architecting core data networks throughout the SPC infrastructure. The selected candidate would work on a team tasked to implement, manage, and maintain a variety of network systems, including wide area networks, local area networks, Internet, and all other communication systems, in support of college-wide student learning objectives.

The individual in this position will:

  • Design, installation, testing and maintenance of the college-wide data network systems. Includes network and security hardware and software architecture, wide area networking equipment, local area core routers/switches, Internet connections and voice over IP systems.
  • Develops and maintains network security and access control policies and procedures in coordination with upper management, and implementation of such policies and procedures in conjunction with other technical staff.
  • Develops the deployment of information systems security mechanisms such as firewalls, IDS's, VPN servers and management stations, and monitoring and periodically reporting security issues to management.
  • Develops and maintains technical documentation of the College's network architecture, security architecture, and network access control procedures.
  • Provides assistance to the IT Operations Director, Network Support Specialists, and Infrastructure Analysts with the development and coordination of college-wide network & systems projects.
  • Performs installation and administration of Information Systems servers and network systems as directed.
  • Maintains cloud network connectivity and designs cloud architecture environments in multiple ecosystems (Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud, etc.).
  • Be able to respond as needed to on-call emergencies & serve on Disaster Recovery Team (DRT)
  • Be capable of physically lifting 50 lbs. occasionally, 20 lbs. frequently, & 10 lbs. constantly, as well as occasionally climbing ladders and crawling on the ground.
  • Be able to effectively and flexibly work a hybrid work schedule of remote and on-campus work as required.

 

This is the fourth of six levels in the Information Technology series. Incumbents coordinate and implement the maintenance, use and enhancement of software or hardware systems critical to the operation of the College.  Responsibilities may include analyzing system capabilities and implementing process and procedure changes to better utilize software or hardware; coordinating with software vendors regarding software support and system enhancements; coordinating projects involving the implementation of new software or hardware, or system changes; and training end users.

Compensation: $76,296.54 - $95,370.68

Requirements:

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field.  Strongly prefer industry certifications (e.g. Cisco, Palo Alto, Microsoft, CompTIA) as part of education.

**Will accept an equivalent combination of education, training, IT Certifications or experience.

 

Experience:

Four (4) years of information technology experience with a concentration of that experience in network engineering or information security.  

Preferred Experience: Network Infrastructure configuration, Virtualization (VMware/HyperV/Nutanix), Firewall, Load Balancing, VPN, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Wireless Networking Administration.

Knowledge:

  • Network architecture models, networking terminology and protocols
  • Knowledge of routing concepts (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, etc.), network design principles, and standardized best practices
  • Knowledge of advanced network systems, including firewalls, load balancers, internet edge routers, & VPN tunnels.
  • Structured Cabling & Media, MDF/IDF Buildout/Design, Specification of UPS & Cooling systems
  • Knowledge of server hardware and software, including enterprise operating systems & directory services
  • Analyzing and utilizing Network Management and Monitoring Systems
  • Interpretation & analysis of event logs, including firewall logs, switch logs, UPS's logs, server logs, etc.

Skills:

  • Interpret blueprints and create technical diagrams using Visio;
  • Perform packet capture and network analysis (Media testers, taps, tone generator & probes);
  • Implement and administer core network services (DNS, DHCP, Active Directory, Radius);
  • Remediate/discover system vulnerabilities;
  • Data mining, interpreting server logs, edge switch logs, UPS's logs, etc.;
  • Install, configure and administer servers (hardware, peripherals, services, shares, settings, directories, storage, etc);
  • Install and administer network equipment (ios code, chassis, stacks, optics, modules, blades, power supplies, UPS systems).
  • Programming and troubleshooting applications, databases, and systems;
  • Utilizing and managing systems;
  • Establishing and following procedural and technical standards;
  • Monitoring and assessing web sites;
  • Training end-users on applications and systems;
  • Communicating technical information to a non-technical audience;
  • Interpreting customer requirements and translating into system specifications;
  • Using a computer and related software applications;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with subordinates, coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.

Physical:

  • Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
  • Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.  Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.  Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
