Senior Sign Language Interpreter [ID: 670]
Position Summary:

Incumbents will provide interpreting/transliterating services and/or C-print captioning services for students and employees, who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing. Responsibilities may include: interpreting and/or C-print captioning in classroom lectures which may require presentation and exchange of highly complex and technical information, related classroom activities, labs, tutoring, clinical, internships, field experiences, student organization meetings, presentations, written material, and other college departments such as advising and financial aid, etc; preparing for class by reviewing course materials which could include syllabi, specific terminology, course textbooks, videos, websites, databases, legal and medical materials, and other methods of reference; providing resource and referrals on Deafness and related issues; acting as a member of the Accessibility Services team. Incumbents accept responsibility for knowledge of and adherence to the role of the interpreter and ethical codes and laws that protect confidentiality of information while providing these services. The candidate selected for this position must be willing to work some evenings as well as the position requires traveling to multiple campus/locations for classes.

Incumbents provide interpreting services or interpreting and C-print captioning services for students, faculty and staff who are deaf or hard of hearing.  Responsibilities may include interpreting or C-print captioning in the classroom and other settings; providing information and resources on deaf related issues; interpreting written material; and acting as a member of the Accessibilty Resources team.

Compensation: $46,978.82 - $58,723.53

Requirements:

Education:

Associate degree required. An Interpreter Training Program (ITP) required. Bachelor's degree preferred. *

Credentials:
Sign Language Interpreter Certification, National Level; or demonstrated Sign Language Interpreting skills, plus documented C-Print Captioning training and experience (assessments from other states or agencies may be deemed equivalent).

Experience:

Two (2) years’ experience interpreting in a post-secondary setting.

* An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job may be acceptable in lieu of those requirements listed above.

Knowledge:

  • Proficient in American Sign Language and English; knowledge of various manual expressive and receptive communication models: Signed English, PSE, Oral, and Tactile interpreting;
  • Interpreting processes, standards, and techniques;
  • Interpreters’ Code of Professional Conduct;
  • Current developments, trends, and techniques in the field of interpreting for both the Deaf and HH as utilized by the Deaf community;
  • Values, behaviors, and language of American Deaf Culture;
  • Basic requirements of ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act);
  • Post-Secondary educational processes, procedures, and student services programs;
  • Familiarity with various subject matter taught by community colleges;
  • Demonstrate working knowledge and proficiency of Windows-based software, hardware, and third party apps including but not limited to: MS Office, Word, Excel, Outlook, Zoom, Otter, Microsoft Teams, and YouTube;
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of the proper protocols in these platforms including video, audio, pinning, recording, spotlighting, chatting, saving, uploading, and editing.
  • High-speed internet for video interpreting without connectivity issues; ability to troubleshoot.

  • Constant repetitive motion and mental processing for providing interpreting services;
  • Assesses student needs and the interpreting situation before, during, and after assignments and makes adjustments as needed;
  • The ability to work as a team and follow proper teaming protocols when working in the classroom or virtually.
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action;
  • Must be willing to seek higher certification and/or maintain certification; 
  • If applicable, the ability to type and communicate in C-Print at a minimum of 60 wpm;
  • Effective professional written, oral, and signed communication skills; demonstrate proper use of English grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, formatting, and spelling;
  • Reviewing, compiling information, and maintaining records; 
  • Value diversity and have a multi-cultural perspective of student populations who are Deaf/HH in order to work effectively and meet their needs;
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and decision-making skills as applied to interactions with students, coworkers, supervisors, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction;

Physical:

  • Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions
  • Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

License:

Sign Language Interpreter Certification, National Level; or demonstrated Sign Language Interpreter skills, documented C-Print Captioning training and experience (assessments from other states or agencies may be deemed equivalent).

Responsibilities:

Day-to-day expectations include:

  • Serve as a resource for employees on Deafness and Hard of Hearing issues;
  • Collaborate with Accessibility Services and employees to assist Deaf/Hard of Hearing students;
  • Willing to work evenings.
