Position Summary:

Typical Essential Duties

  • Manages classes and courses in firearms;
  • Supervise activities and staff to present courses and classes;
  • Performs preventative maintenance on Caswell Target system to keep it continuously operational;
  • Responsible for security of indoor range and contents;
  • Responsible for maintaining and strictly enforcing safety policies and procedures;
  • Ensures that all firearm instructors are appropriately certified and trained in the safe operation of firearms.

This is a stand-alone classification in the Range series.  The classification is responsible for managing the Firearms Range. Responsibilities include: prioritizing and reviewing range schedules; maintaining firearm, monitoring and ordering inventories including ammunition, targets and target backers, maintaining and repairing target system; and providing educational programs.

Compensation: $44,319.64 - $55,399.55

Requirements:

Education:

Associate degree or two-year technical certificate.

Experience:

Five (5) years experience of firearms use/safety and weapons maintenance/repair and Firearm Range management. Two (2) years experience lead firearms instructor and rangemaster.

* An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job may be acceptable in lieu of those requirements listed above.

Knowledge:

  • Basic Recruit Training;
  • Basic Recruit Firearms Training;
  • Advanced and Specialized Firearms Training;
  • Possess good supervisory skills, written and verbal communication skills and general computer skills.
  • Firearms, ammunition and safety standards;
  • Firearms inspection and repair;
  • Range target systems;
  • Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations;
  • Budgeting principles;
  • Principles and procedures of recordkeeping;
  • Principles and methods of training and instruction;
  • Computers and related software applications.

Skills:

  • Work with students and staff with good human interaction and communications skills;
  • Instruct academy students as well as veteran officers.
  • Prioritizing and assigning work;
  • Implementing and recommending policies;
  • Applying applicable laws, rules, and regulations;
  • Performing inspection, maintenance and repair of weapons and armory/range equipment;
  • Assessing training needs and provide specialized instruction for individual officers related to firearm use;
  • Preparing and maintain accurate and complete records;
  • Using a computer and related software applications;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with subordinates, coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.

Physical:

  • Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
  • Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Incumbents may be subjected to a variety of firearms and other weapons, related chemicals, gun cleaning solvents, ammunition and explosive materials, ammunition smoke and hand and power tools related to weapon repair, and extreme noise of firearms

License:

  • Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission certified firearms instructor;
  • Certified Firearms Armorer;
  • Certified or former Law Enforcement or Corrections Officer preferred.
  •  Certified Weapons Armorer;
