Position Summary:

Typical Essential Duties

  • Plans, coordinates, and evaluates public awareness materials, events, programs, tours, and classes;
  • Monitors the developments in the library and archival professions, applying new technologies applicable to archival operations;
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with College departments, library staff, volunteers, and community groups;
  • Prepares grant applications;
  • Works collaboratively with campus library staff and faculty to promote and educate materials in the collections;
  • Demonstrates an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the community;
  • Communicates effectively with people from various backgrounds, both individually and in groups.

This class is the fifth of six levels in the Library Services series. Incumbents maintain, records, preserves and promote the historical collections of the library. Responsibilities may include establishing archival policy for special collections; analyzing and appraising items to determine value for collection; cataloging and classifying books, papers, artifacts, and other materials; preparing and planning archival programs; developing finding aids; and maintaining the collections.

Compensation: $46,226.34 - $64,716.88

Requirements:

Education:

Master’s degree from ALA accredited program with course work or concentration in archival procedures, management, and preservation required.

Experience:

Two (2) years of professional experience as a Librarian. Experience in archives collection processing and management preferred.  Experience with automated storage and retrieval systems, electronic records, database design/management, and electronic publication.

Physical:

  • Positions in this class typically require: stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.  If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
  • Incumbents may be subjected to dust, poor ventilation, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and light travel.

Oversees the management of the library’s archives including establishing archival policy; identifying, appraising, accessioning, arranging, describing, managing, preserving, and making available historical documents.

Develops and maintains, monitors, and evaluates collections in assigned area of responsibility; recommends additions and removal of collection items; processes purchased and donated materials; orders supplies and catalogs materials; and performs related activities.

Maintains the security and preservation of all manuscripts, books, and other media.

Responds to inquiries from researchers; assists researchers in accessing archival materials; coordinates archival programs.
