I am a DNP graduate from the University of Alabama with almost 40 years of clinical nursing experience. My basic nursing practice background is diversified to include areas such as medical surgical, orthopedics, critical care and emergency care. Also over the many years in advanced practice nursing I have worked in the capacity of many roles, including clinical nurse manager, clinical nurse specialist, nurse practitioner, as well as researcher and professor. My clinical practice as a nurse practitioner has been in internal medicine as a primary care nurse practitioner. I have worked diligently to maintain my AACN Adult Nurse Practitioner certification and have been dedicated to maintaining clinical and educational competency throughout my career.
As an Advanced Practice Nurse, my career focus and passion for patient care has always been in the direction of health promotion and prevention through patient education. A lifetime goal is to make an impact on patient quality of life through increasing patient knowledge of cardiovascular disease process. My belief is that this will be instrumental in empowering patients to take ownership of their own care. My primary clinical practice philosophy is to teach the at-risk patient for heart disease and other debilitating diseases, so that their participation and involvement in their own care can promote a healthier lifestyle which will improve their future health. This clinical philosophy is also instrumental in supporting my passion for influencing future nursing students toward health promotion. Educating nursing students on having a positive impact on patients’ quality of life can drive the future for healthcare.
As a professor, my clinical nursing philosophy is based on improving critical thinking interactions between the instructor and student in both the classroom and in the clinical setting. I recognize, development of methods to enhance critical thinking interaction often need to be individualized to different learning styles to enhance the learning process. I believe the strength, background, knowledge and confident nature of the instructor in the clinical setting is instrumental in development of the students’ critical thinking growth. The development of critical thinking skills is influential in promoting a stronger nursing student, graduate and nurse.
I also believe the greatest knowledge gained by nursing students is achieved through a strong clinical interaction which influences the learning process. Availability and accessibility of the instructor to students is pivotal in supporting this educational growth. Along with instructor accessibility, it is vital to develop a strong underpinning in the facilitation of critical thinking skills. Also, fostering enthusiasm for the nursing profession is a foundational driving force in keeping students engaged. These are all qualities I strive to exhibit with my nursing students in the clinical setting. These qualities have helped me to influence the quality of the student and nurse that we graduate from SPC.
I have taught at all four levels in the associate level while at SPC, however I predominately teach Level 4. I have served on many faculty committees while at SPC, such as curriculum, evaluation, test writing and scholarship to name a few. I have also served as a preceptor for both education and advanced practice nursing nurses. I am currently involved in several professional organizations as a member, including West Coast Council of Advanced Practice Nurses, Tampa Bay Advanced Practice Nurses Council, Tampa Bay Simulation Network, Florida Nurse Practitioner Network and Preventive Cardiovascular Nurse Association.
