It is an honor to be a part of the Communications Department at SPC as an American Sign Language Professor.

I was born to Deaf parents and was raised in Puerto Rico. One of the many fun facts about me is that Puerto Rican Sign Language was my first language. Did you know that ASL is not a universal language? In fact, there are more than 300 sign languages! Neat, isn’t it? Come and take ASL classes to learn more!! While in PR, I learned some ASL at a later young age. I moved to New Jersey when I was young. There I learned English and more of American Sign Language. All my life, I have been immersed in the Deaf world, fluent in a few different sign languages, and had many wonderful deaf role models whom I look up to while growing up.

Teaching is a work of heart. I have been teaching American Sign Language for 7+ years, and I have loved every minute of it. I hold a Master’s Degree in Teaching American Sign Language. Over the years, I have been teaching diverse courses in American Sign Language, Deaf Culture, Linguistics in ASL, and some more. Besides being an educator, I am also a mentor to ASL interpreting students and deaf children.

There are many reasons why I love teaching, but I will mention two here. Working with diverse students is a joy of mine. They are a big part of my teaching career. When working and learning with students from a variety of backgrounds and cultures present in the classroom, students gain an understanding of ASL, and Deaf culture and history. It also teaches students how to use their strengths and points of view to contribute their advocates to the deaf community. Based on my teaching experience, passion makes difference in effective teaching. I firmly believe that passion plays an important role in creating a positive learning environment that will lead to effective learning and teaching. Passion may influence student learning. Passion inspires and stimulates, and teaching with passion promotes learning.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends, and hanging out with my dog. Also, I enjoy traveling and learning languages, cultures, and food (not all, though. ☺️)
