April Smith is a singer, dancer, and a sociologist whose work blends the rigors of academia with the rhythms of everyday life. Specializing in gender, education, and music, she earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Sociology from the University of South Florida. April began teaching during her graduate program at USF, later expanding her educational reach by instructing school behavioral specialists and administrators in non-violent crisis intervention.

Her research explores how music serves as a catalyst for community, particularly among students and immigrant populations. While she has yet to publish her work, April’s commitment to connecting people through shared experience is evident in both her academic and nonprofit endeavors. She currently serves as the grant writer and administrator for a local mental health–focused nonprofit, where she channels her sociological insight into practical, community-driven solutions.

Whether in the classroom, the rehearsal hall, or the grant office, April approaches her work with the belief that knowledge—like music—is meant to be shared, and that the best communities are those built in harmony.
