B.A. Psychology; Philosophy, Saint Louis University
M.A. English Literature, University of Vermont

My Master’s thesis focused on how Victorian writers used the Gothic as a mode of cultural critique: “Inheritance and Gender Identity: The Destabilizing Effects of the Gothic Mode in Sensation Fiction.” Although my research interests revolve around feminist and cultural theories that focus on Gothic and Victorian literature, I enjoy applying literary theory to just about any genre or mode of entertainment, especially science/speculative fiction, fantasy, and modern literature. (Right now I am very interested the Arthurian myth in all of its forms.) In the summer of 2016, I had the pleasure to study at Exeter College at University of Oxford in England for a summer literature program. My seminars focused on Victorian and Modernist literature where I gained valuable knowledge that has made it into my teaching.

I have always enjoyed the analysis of communication (written, verbal, or visual) and its relationship with culture and how this relationship affects the way we understand ourselves and the people around us. I try to make writing lessons and assignments fun and relevant. Since writing is an excellent discipline and skill for students to develop and question ideas, I try to emphasize how the knowledge of analysis and effective communication will help students improve their reasoning and comprehension abilities not only across academic disciplines but also in their professional environments. Being able to express ideas and opinions clearly and effectively is at the core of my teaching philosophy. I want my students to believe in themselves as independent thinkers and to be confident in their abilities as writers. Most importantly, I want my students to realize that their ideas matter.

In my free time I like to read, travel, watch movies, practice yoga, go on bike rides, experience live music, and hang out with my cat, Peaches.
