Dr. Heinze earned his Ph.D. in Business Administration (IT emphasis) from Florida Atlantic University and has been teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral level for over 20 years at institutions including SPC, California State University, Chico, and University of Tampa. He has a Bachelor of Science in Instructional Technology and an MBA in Management Information Systems from California State University, Chico.

Dr. Heinze has nearly 30 years of experience in industry as a learning consultant, corporate trainer, and web/graphic designer (Oracle, Simon & Schuster, Pittard Sullivan, NBC, TNT, etc.), including employment at TCT Technical Training in Silicon Valley, Agilent Technologies, and Ameriquest Mortgage. In 1999, he co-founded the web design company Design Salad with Siri creator and former GE VP and Amazon AWS director Darren Haas.

Dr. Heinze has also worked in the entertainment industry in TV show development and pre-preproduction, including writing dozens of episodes for Disney (including the 
international smash comedy Eena Meena Deeka), Nickelodeon, Cosmos-Maya, Omens Studios, and the NBA. Other pursuits include music production (releases on Sony, EMI-Parlophone, DJ International, Eternal Sunday, etc.), book and magazine illustration (Applewood Books, Arcadia Publishing, York Publishing, Videomaker Magazine, etc.) and three comic strips at The Orion, multiple winner of the national College Newspaper of the Year Award. In 2021, he began a career in fine art.

Dr. Heinze teaches the CCIT Capstone course along with data science and cloud technologies courses, and his research interests include e-commerce, sustainability, and data analytics. His 2009 paper in the European Journal of Information Systems, "Why college graduates choose IT: a multi-theoretical perspective," is one of the seminal pieces on the topic and has been cited in the top journals in the world, including ISR and MISQ.

He was instrumental in creating the framework for the Cloud Technologies AS Program used by Florida's State College System and also developed the SPC BAS Data Science sub-plan.
