Professor Lewis recieved her associates degree in nursing from Southern Union College in Opelika, Alabama in 1998.  She later obtained her BSN while working at Lychburg General hospital, a magnet hospital which offered a cohort to obtain her BSN in 2014. She went on to obtain her Masters of Nursing in Education from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia as well.  Mary has over 25 years nursing experience which includes:  medical surgical nurisng, dialysis, emergency room and cardiac special procedures -cath lab recovery. She also spent several years as a Clinical Nurse Specialist for the State of Geogia Public Health.
Mary has been working in nursing education now for over 10 years. She has spent most of that time teaching clinical and theory with the final semester nursing students and has done a variety of other classes including a continuing education classes for nurses to return to work.
     Mary also volunteers in the community teaching wellness, facilitating book studies as well as volunteering with the homelss population. 

Teaching Philosophy
     I believe that teaching/learning is an interactive and reciprocal process conducted to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge and skills necessary to critically think and make independent judgments. Mary has a passion for teaching and transferring knowledge.   She utilizes many methods including an interactive classroom. She believes in promoting learning by using a variety of teaching strategies, including role modeling, mentoring and coaching within a safe and caring environment.
