Nancy Teten, LCSW, MCAP, CCFC, MSW, MA, received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of South Florida in Tampa. She received her first graduate degree as a Master of Arts in Aging Studies from the University of South Florida in Tampa and later completed her second graduate degree as a Master in Social Work from the University of South Florida in Tampa. During this time, the University of South Florida achieved national status as a Research One University and is now known as a "Pre-Eminent" University. She has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses at the University of South Florida. She is Phi Beta Kappa Faculty and is proud of her many years of accomplishments. She has completed her fifth year of the Ph.D. Program in Social Work at the University of South Florida in Tampa and is now working towards completing her dissertation to achieve her Ph.D. in Social Work.

She early retired from the University of South Florida in 2016 and celebrates her 19th year of teaching Addiction Studies in the Human Services Program at St. Petersburg College in 2020. Her most satisfying accomplishments are interactions with her students and helping them to become evidence-based, state-of-the-art addiction professionals offering premiere treatment opportunities to those addicts and alcoholics who are ready to change and experience their new life of recovery. She enjoys enhancing the learning experience by challenging students to think critically and to become actively involved in their academic coursework and their future career.

Professor Teten has extensive experience in the field of addictions including Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. In Jail Drug Treatment Program Manager for seven years and has been treating addictions, psychiatric disorders and memory disorders for an additional twenty years at the University of South Florida 's College of Medicine as a Department of Neurology, Neurosciences Institute Faculty member and in her previous private practice.  She has achieved the highest level of addictions certification awarded by the Florida Certification Board as a Master's Certified Addiction Professional (MCAP), as well as, her Certified Addiction Professional (CAP) and is internationally certified by the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (ICRC). She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of Florida and is additionally qualified to supervise registered clinical social work interns.In addition, she is a Clinically Certified Forensic Counselor.

She has lectured extensively on topics including addictions, dual diagnoses, social work, mental health disorders, forensic psychiatry, incarceration and the aging process (gerontology). She also functions as an Examining Committee Member to Determine Incapacity for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit of Hillsborough County (for the last 20 years) and is a Psychological Consultant for a local Assisted Living Facility. Her career spans more than 35 years and has included working full – time, while attending the university ,to achieve each of her degrees. She understands the challenges of raising a family, attending college, becoming a caregiver for her elderly parents and succeeding in her chosen career. She always reminds her students to become their best, as they will one day become her colleagues!
